Don't sweep or vacuum rodent droppings
Dried droppings and urine can carry hantavirus and other diseases that spread through stirred-up dust. Air out the space for 30 minutes, wear rubber or nitrile gloves, spray droppings with disinfectant or a 1:10 bleach solution and let them soak for 5 minutes, then wipe them up with paper towels and bag them. Wash your hands afterward.
How to Identify Mouse vs Rat Droppings
Check these features before you rely on any single one โ the combination is what confirms the ID.
The biggest clue. Mouse droppings are about 1/8 to 1/4 inch (3โ6 mm), like a grain of rice. Rat droppings are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12โ20 mm), like a raisin or olive pit. Photograph them next to a coin for scale.
Mouse droppings are thin and rod-shaped with pointed ends. Norway rat droppings are thick and capsule-shaped with blunt ends; roof rat droppings are slightly smaller, curved, and pointed.
Mice leave dozens of droppings a day scattered along their travel routes, in drawers, and behind appliances. Rats leave fewer but larger droppings, often clustered in specific spots.
Fresh droppings are dark, shiny, and soft like putty. Old ones are dry, grey, and crumble when pressed with a stick. Fresh droppings mean active rodents; mark the area and check again in a few days.
Mice favor kitchen drawers, pantries, under sinks, and wall voids. Roof rats prefer attics, upper floors, and trees. Norway rats live low, in basements, crawl spaces, and burrows outside.
Look for gnaw marks, chewed food packaging, greasy rub marks along walls, nesting material like shredded paper, scratching noises at night, and a musky urine smell.
Rodent Droppings and What They're Mistaken For
Mouse Droppings
Rice-sized (1/8โ1/4 inch), dark, rod-shaped with pointed ends, scattered in large numbers along walls and in drawers. Deer mice in rural areas can carry hantavirus.
Rat Droppings
Raisin-sized (1/2โ3/4 inch), thick, blunt-ended (Norway rat) or curved and pointed (roof rat), often in clusters. Rats can spread leptospirosis and other diseases.
Cockroach Droppings
Smaller than mouse droppings: tiny black specks like ground pepper or coffee grounds, or small cylinders with ridges along the sides. Found in cabinets, behind appliances, and in corners.
Squirrel Droppings
Larger and rounder than mouse droppings, around 3/8 inch, barrel-shaped, and lighter brown, often in attics. Easily confused with rat droppings.
Bat Guano
Similar in size to mouse droppings, but it piles up under a roost and crumbles into shiny insect fragments when crushed. Can carry histoplasmosis spores, so don't disturb piles without protection.
Drywood Termite Pellets
Tiny, hard, six-sided pellets like sand or coffee grounds, in small piles below wood. A sign of termites, not rodents.
