How to Identify Clover Mites
Check these features before you rely on any single one โ the combination is what confirms the ID.
Clover mites are tiny, about 1/30 inch (under 1 mm), smaller than a pinhead. You'll usually notice moving red specks rather than individual bugs, so use your phone's zoom for a photo.
Bright red to reddish-brown, sometimes looking greenish-brown as adults after feeding. Young mites are bright red.
The tell-tale feature: the front pair of legs is as long as the body or longer and stretches forward, often mistaken for antennae.
Squashed clover mites leave a red-orange stain on walls, curtains, and window frames. It's pigment, not blood, and it can stain, so brush or vacuum them instead.
They swarm on sunny south- and west-facing walls, windowsills, and patios in spring and fall, coming from lush lawns and plants right next to the foundation.
Clover mites feed on grass, clover, and other plants. They don't bite people or pets, don't carry disease, and don't infest food. Indoors they're only a nuisance.
Tiny Red Bugs and How to Tell Them Apart
Clover Mite
Pinhead-sized, red, with long front legs, swarming on sunny walls and windowsills in spring and fall. Doesn't bite; leaves a red stain when crushed.
Chigger
Almost invisible red-orange larvae found outdoors in tall grass and brush, not on walls. They cause intensely itchy red bites around ankles, waistbands, and the backs of knees.
Spider Mite
Tiny red or yellow-green mites on the undersides of leaves of houseplants and garden plants, with fine webbing. Harms plants, not people.
Red Velvet Mite
Much larger (around 1/8 inch), plush and velvety bright red, wandering alone on soil and leaf litter after rain. Harmless.
Concrete Mite (Balaustium)
Fast-running red mite on sunny concrete, patios, and walls in spring. Similar to clover mites but with shorter front legs; can occasionally nip, but it's minor.
Bird Mites
Tiny pale to reddish mites that wander indoors after nesting birds leave a nest near windows, vents, or eaves, and can bite people. Remove old nests carefully.
