How to Identify Tiny Black Bugs

Check these features before you rely on any single one โ€” the combination is what confirms the ID.

Where You Found Them

Location is the biggest clue. Bedding, carpets, and closets suggest carpet beetles or fleas. Flour, cereal, and spices point to pantry beetles or weevils. Houseplants mean fungus gnats. Damp bathrooms, sinks, and basements suggest springtails or drain flies.

Do They Jump, Fly, or Crawl?

Jumping bugs are usually fleas (on pets, carpets, and ankles) or springtails (in damp spots). Weak flyers around plants are fungus gnats. Slow crawlers are typically beetles, and fast trails of crawlers are ants.

Body Shape

Round, shell-like bodies are beetles. A long snout means a weevil. Flattened side-to-side and wingless means a flea. A pinched waist and elbowed antennae means an ant. Snap a close photo with your phone's zoom or a magnifier.

Shiny or Mottled

Black carpet beetles are shiny, oval, and dark. Varied carpet beetles are mottled black, white, and yellow. Drugstore and cigarette beetles are reddish-brown, while springtails are often dull grey-black.

Larvae and Shed Skins

Fuzzy, carrot-shaped larvae or their shed skins near baseboards, under beds, or in closets mean carpet beetles. Small worms in food packages mean pantry pests. These clues are often easier to spot than the adults.

Bites or Damage

Itchy bites around the ankles suggest fleas. Holes in wool or natural fabrics suggest carpet beetles or clothes moths. Damaged food packages mean pantry pests. Most other tiny black bugs are harmless nuisances.

The Most Common Tiny Black Bugs Indoors

Black Carpet Beetle

Caution

Shiny, oval, black to dark brown, 1/8โ€“3/16 inch, found near windows, carpets, and closets. The larvae eat wool, silk, fur, and feathers, and their hairs can cause an itchy rash.

Pantry Beetles & Weevils

Caution

Rice and granary weevils have a distinct snout; flour beetles are reddish-brown and flat. Found in flour, rice, pasta, cereal, and pet food. Throw out infested food and store the rest in sealed containers.

Fungus Gnats

Harmless

Tiny black flies with long legs that hover around houseplants and windows. Their larvae live in moist potting soil. Let the soil dry out between waterings.

Fleas

Caution

Dark reddish-black, wingless, flattened side-to-side, and great jumpers. Usually brought in by pets, they bite ankles and legs. Treat pets and vacuum thoroughly.

Springtails

Harmless

Tiny grey-black bugs that pop into the air when disturbed, in damp bathrooms, basements, potted plants, and window wells. Harmless; fix moisture and they disappear.

Odorous House Ants

Harmless

Small dark-brown to black ants in trails along counters, which smell like rotten coconut when crushed. Bait stations work better than sprays.

Bed Bugs

Caution

Adults are reddish-brown, flat, and apple-seed sized rather than black, but their droppings are black specks on mattress seams. See our bed bug guide if you find bites in a line.
